Morning Mindfulness: How to Get the Most Out of Your Mornings

I had never been one to particularly look forward to the morning. I was cranky, tired, and not in the mood to do anything. But learning how to change this attitude has given me more time, energy, and a positive mindset going into the day. I am now able to wake up in the morning and actually enjoy everything I am doing. I did this by breaking up my morning into 4 different parts, each with different goals.

The night before

Getting the most out of your mornings does not start in the morning, but instead, the night before. At night, you are fully awake and have more energy than you would in the morning. So, you should set aside this time to plan your outfit, your morning schedule, or your entire day. This is the time to do all the thinking, because you and I both know that that is not going to happen when you are half awake at the crack of dawn. Then, when you wake up, you already know what you have to do and what the plan is for the day. You don’t need to think about what needs to get done and try to remember your entire to-do list because you did all of that the night before. Your outfit is ready and your schedule is set, all you have to do is follow the plan you already made for yourself. This not only ensures that everything gets done, but significantly improves your mindset going into the day.

Right when you wake up

I would consider the “right when you wake up” stage as the half awake half asleep part of the morning. I have one tip for you to successfully–and quickly–wake up and stay up: put your phone/alarm on the other side of the room. I am sure 90% of the people reading this article have already heard this tip, but it is too important not to share it again. I went from snoozing for almost 45 minutes to being up and not going back into bed in 9 minutes when my alarm is on the other side of the room. I do admit, I still might click the snooze button once. But having to physically get out of bed and walk to my alarm has forced me to actually wake up for the day.

Another added bonus to this tip is that you can also eliminate distractions the night before if your alarm is on your phone. A part of my nightime routine is always reading before I go to bed. But, almost every night, I would finish reading and then pick up my phone and scroll through Instagram for another hour. The phone was right there next to me, so why not? But, now that my phone is on the other side of the room, I actually go to sleep at the time I want.

Trying to wake yourself up

At this point in the game, you are kind of awake, but still tired. So what next? Now you want to make yourself wake up. I do this in 2 different ways every morning and I can tell you from experience that they work. First, right after I shut my alarm off, I drink an entire, 16 ounce bottle of water that I filled up the night before. Yes, the entire thing. This might sound crazy, but doing this alone wakes me up so so so much! And as an added bonus, I just drank 2 glasses of water and have less I have to drink during the day.

After I chug the water, I go into the bathroom. I have a very specific morning routine, but one of the first things I do is go to the bathroom and wash my face. If you need to wash your face every morning, why not use this to wake you up. Splash yourself with some cold water and I promise you will definitely feel more awake.

Going through a routine

Like I previously mentioned, I have been following a super specific morning routine for about a year now. Doing this makes it so easy to know what you have to do in the morning because you are so used to doing everything in the exact same order. I usually go on auto-pilot because I know my routine so well. For me, after I wake up, I go to the bathroom, brush my teeth, wash my face, put on moisturizer, get dressed, do my makeup, eat breakfast, and then start the school day.

I know this routine like the back of my hand because I have been following it for so long. I even accidentally brushed my teeth twice one morning when I tried to switch the order I do everything in the bathroom because I was so used to my routine!

If you are trying to implement a new morning routine in your life, consistency is by far the most important. Now is the time for new years resolutions and unfortunately many of those are not followed. The key to setting up a successful morning routine is to make it both reasonable and manageable.

You know your life, your schedule, and your attitude in the morning better than anyone. So make a morning routine that fits with the structure of your life. Don’t plan to wake up at 5 in the morning and exercise, shower, and clean the house all by 7:00 if you usually don’t wake up until 7:30 on a normal day. Start small and work your way up to your morning goals. If you are consistent with your routine, eventually you will be able to accomplish whatever you want in the morning.

Remember, everyone’s lifestyle is different, so your morning is going to be different as well. There is no “one size fits all” morning routine for you to follow. Try out whatever works for you and be consistent in your efforts. Eventually, you will set the right habits to truly be able to make the most out of your mornings!
